Transylvania Hiking Rimetea to Coltesti
Rimetea to Coltesti, Romania – 2024.Our first day of hiking was between two small Transylvanian villages starting in Rimetea, up a path to a ridge high above the town, along the ridge then descending into the village of Coltesti.
The Rimetea area has been inhabited since Roman times because of the presence of iron ore. The present village of Rimetea dates from the 17th century when it was an important Austrian mining and blacksmiths’ center. Many of the existing buildings date from this time and their design is unique for Romania.
The village of Coltesti has a similar history to Rimetea and today is known primarily for the nearby ruins of Trascau Fortress. Both villages are in a valley surrounded by the Trascau Mountains.
